Although infrared data links have long been available, the lack of standards has caused incompatibilities between technologies and hindered the development of IR technology in the field of wireless communications. Because of this, the IRDA (Infrared Data Association) has developed a set of standards that allow users to establish up to 115.2kbps serial link connections up to 10 feet (a rate equivalent to floppy drive throughput). However, the limitation of the standard’s communication distance still excludes the IR data link complying with this standard from the LAN area. It is reported that, IRDA is developing new standards in order to achieve faster communications within a wider range.
