宋代史学在研究领域、史著作例、文学方法等方面呈现出新的时代特点，这些特点与宋代居思想意识形态领域统治地位的理学密切相关。从史学研究领域来说，理学对促进宋代的唐五代史与家本朝史的发达发挥着重要作用；从史著作例来说，理学与宋代编年体史的盛行、纪事本末体和纲目体的创立、学术史专著的编撰有着密切关系，方志体例的确立也折射出理学的影响；从史学方法来说，宋人治史求会通与理学联系在一起，理学促使这一时期史论史考空前发达、只有把理学与宋代史学结合起来考察，才能正确而全面地认识宋代文学发展的特点。
