福建省自然科学基金设立于1986年,10多年来,共批准资助1712项,经费3080万元,资助科技人员7510名。每年都有1730名科技人员在从事基础性研究。青年项目大幅度增加,“八五”比“七五”期间增加5.4倍,共培养硕士生964名,博士生105名,为促进该省基础研究队伍的稳定与培养青年人才作出贡献。已发表论文4824篇,其中在国外学术刊物上发表292篇,国内学术刊物上发表3513篇,出版专著87部,180多个项目获奖,其中省部级科技进步奖71项。“八五”期间鉴定项目140项,其中国际水平34项,国内首创31项,国内先进78项,标志基础研究与应用基础研究水平的国家自然科学奖以及其它国家和省部级的获奖项目中,有不少都获得省自然科学基金资助,根据统计,1992～1996年期间,该省自然科学基金资助的发表论文数量与质量均居全国地方基金
