Finding dwarfing rootstocks for citrus has great potential value for future high density. Short fruit trees are easy to pick, often trim less, and may be easier to adapt to the overall mechanization of orchard operations. A variety of rootstocks have been shown to limit the growth of scion plants. Many of these may be true dwarfs, but may also be due to dwarf viruses, or because rootstocks are not well adapted to the local soil and climatic conditions. Choosing a dwarfing rootstock is based on a range of conditions, such as dwarfing, yield performance, fruit size and quality, fruit tree life, adaptability to soil and climatic conditions, and application to a particular line spacing. Although plant breeders are able to breed some of the finest low-density citrus varieties, a more reasonable and easier shortcut to accomplishing the same task seems to be finding dwarfing stocks. We had great success if we were able to control the tree shape and yield in a variety of situations with dwarfing stock.
