According to the May 1978 issue of the British “Consulting Engineer,” it is almost impossible to require dam and reservoir areas to completely avoid faults. Natural dam sites in the canyon are generally rock-weak due to vertical dislocation, so most dams have to be built across the fault. If these fault zones become active, there is a recurring risk of continuous slow creep or abrupt relative displacement across the fault. In this paper, the various influences of possible displacements of dam and reservoirs are discussed. Taking Lal Project in Iran as an example, various factors that need to be considered in dam site planning in a potential seismic activity area are listed.
