作为新文学史上一位重要作家,吴组缃的短篇小说虽然数量不多,但却是一座有待进一步开掘的小说美学宝藏。吴组缃短篇小说的独特性在于:其既在创作立场和思想倾向上与启蒙文学、左翼文学相通,但在艺术上又明显与之拉开距离,自成格局,成为“左翼作家中最成功的农村小说家”;其既以乡土题材、风格取胜,又区别于那些脱离社会现实、思想弱化,一味追求艺术上“纯美”的乡土小说。吴组缃严格坚持现实主义创作方法,在与社会和时代的密切联系中,彰显了短篇小说自身的美学价值。真切深刻地反映现实生活,是吴组缃创作的宗旨;而写“我所熟悉的人和事”则是他把握社会和时代的艺术方式。因此,他以对皖南乡村经验的独特叙述,不仅为新文学乡土小说开拓了新的领地,也为现代短篇小说创作提供了新鲜的艺术经验。
