TB Strom, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston: In 1977, Pirson and colleagues in Belgium reported a five-fold increase in mortality from liver failure in patients with renal failure who had positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) before or after transplantation . Meanwhile, 40 to 50% of patients with renal failure in Europe are HBsAg positive. In contrast, the proportion of HBsAg carriers was lower (<5%) after simple precautions were taken in hospitals in the United States and other North American hospitals. Most cases of viral hepatitis are non-A non-B type. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, there are about 800 kidney transplant recipients
