高阶模光纤通常是一种多包层结构的大模场光纤。为了获得模场面积较大的包层高阶模以抑制高功率光纤激光器或放大器中的非线性效应和避免光纤损伤,高阶模光纤的结构参数需要满足一些基本条件。利用波动方程理论推导了多包层阶跃折射率分布的高阶模光纤的特征方程,说明了高阶模光纤结构参数选择的依据和方法,并通过数值计算,分析了高阶模光纤包层的半径及折射率大小对纤芯导模的影响。结果表明,当高阶模光纤的包层半径和折射率大小满足一定的条件时,光纤包层结构不会影响纤芯的模场分布,包层高阶模的模场还会出现均匀分布的特点。
