本文认为强调华裔移民的“阶级流动性”是哈特关于华裔移民作品的一个显著特点。虽然华裔移民在他的作品中以东方“他者”的身份出现,但是哈特并非纯粹地从种族主义出发,而是利用对东方“他者”的建构来反击美国北方意识形态对西部的“他者化”。哈特对华裔移民的特殊建构体现了他打造一个自由文明的西部“自我”的意图,因此具有复杂的“他者”内涵。
This paper argues that emphasizing the “class mobility” of Chinese immigrants is one of the salient features of Hart’s work on Chinese immigrants. Although Chinese immigrants appeared in his works as the “other’s”, Hart did not simply start from racism but instead used the construction of the East as a “Other” to fight back against the northern American ideology “Westernization” to the West. Hart’s special construction of ethnic Chinese immigrants embodies his intention of creating a free and civilized western “self” and therefore has a complicated “other’s” meaning.
