Regulation of oxidative stress plays a key role in tumor development and anti-cancer strategies. Many signaling pathways associated with oncogenesis regulate ROS through direct or indirect mechanisms. Often, high levels of reactive oxygen species are detrimental to cells, whereas the redox state of cancer cells is different from that of normal cells and cancer cells often exhibit high levels of reactive oxygen species due to aberrations in the metabolism and signaling pathways of cancer cells . The study found that high levels of reactive oxygen species in different circumstances may have a catalytic effect on tumorigenesis, but also may play a role in tumor suppression. Researchers can use these seemingly “contradictory” effects to develop anti-cancer strategies.
