The speed and complexity of operations have posed serious challenges to the enhancement of present and future submarine systems in the regional and coastal environments. This challenge has been posed by the renewed recognition of non-anti-submarine missions and the increased presence of potential enemies more complex than ever before. In the procurement and training, budgets are tightening, to meet this challenge requires system designers to build smaller, less required personnel and more capable combat systems. To do this, future combat systems must automate many of the tasks currently performed by the operator while providing ancillary functions to maintain operational advantage.
