In Mainland China,English is a compulsory course for secondary school students.Students demonstrate diverse perfor-mances based on their different English proficiency.What exactly motivates these students to learn English is not very clear.In thisstudy,the author sets secondary students with different English proficiency as the object.In the article,the author mainly exploresthe motivational orientation of secondary school students with different English proficiency in Mainland China.The questions to beinvestigated are what the motivational orientation of secondary students is and(if there is/are)what the difference(s)between thestudents with high English proficiency and those with low English proficiency is/are.
