Shanghai was already the fifth largest city in the world in the 1930s. It was mixed with the double collision of imperialism and capitalism and quickly changed the original urban landscape. Mao Dun’s novels are famous for describing Shanghai’s capitalist society. Capitalist actions and economic changes are the focus of attention. They are different from the Beijing school, the new sensation school or the novels of the late Qing dynasty. Mao Dun’s penchant for economic capitalization of Shanghai is precisely what the author’s personal experience of social abbreviation, confirms the bit by bit to the modern city of Shanghai record. There is indeed an intention in the author’s novels to criticize capitalists morally, as Gudeman puts it, that Chinese always associate economic and moral as criteria of criticism.
