Charles Brookton Brown introduced British gothic novels to American literature, but gave it rich content to make it realize the localization of the United States. His novels discuss the negative effects of hostility and religious fanaticism between white and Indians as well as the alienation brought by urban life. They open up the pattern of early American novels and make the novel an expression of American experience. American literature made a significant contribution to get rid of the shackles of British literature.
