Objective: To investigate the relationship between microvessel density (MVD) and expression of cathepsin D (CD) in breast cancer. Methods: Quantitative and semi-quantitative studies of MVD and CD in breast cancer tissues were performed by immunohistochemistry. Results: MVD and CD expression in breast cancer tissues were closely related to lymph node metastasis. The MVD in the axillary lymph node metastasis group (131.8±39.8) was significantly higher than that in the adenoma negative breast cancer (NNBC) group (78 .1±27.1) (P<0.001); CD high expression in the axillary lymph node metastasis group (33/36, 91.7%) was significantly more than in the NNBC group (16/36, 44.4%) ( P<0.01). MVD is closely related to CD expression in breast cancer tissues; distant metastasis and early death are higher in MVD and CD expression is stronger. Conclusion: The increase of MVD and the high expression of CD in breast cancer may synergistically promote tumor metastasis. Breast cancers rich in microvessels and high expression of CD should be considered as high-risk patients with distant metastasis and early death.
