To investigate the relationship between vitamin A level and acute respiratory infection (ARI) mortality, based on the monitoring of death of children under 5 years of age in Henan Province, 10 757 children under 5 years of age in two townships of Lushi County with relatively low VitA level were enrolled in this study. Serum VitA were measured and randomly divided into medication group and control group (no medication group) for two years. The relationship between VitA level and ARI mortality was observed. Results After two years of oral administration of VitA, the ARI mortality in the medication group was significantly lower than that in the control group (U = 1.933, P <0.05). Suggesting that supplementation of VitA may have a role in reducing mortality in children under 5 years of age
