美国是因特网的发源地,电脑产量和普及率为世界之冠,网络用户数量也遥遥领先于其他国家。截止到1997年初,美国与因特网联网的电脑有1,100万台,占全球总量1,610万台的63％。各国与因特网联网的网络已有不下7万个,其中一半多都在美国。拥有1台以上个人电脑的家庭,已占美国家庭总数的四成。美国因特网用户数量已超过2,000万,相当于全球的五成多。因特网已在美国经济、文化、产业、宣传、新闻、娱乐和生活等各个方面,得到广泛而有效的应用。
The United States is the birthplace of the Internet, with the highest computer output and penetration rate in the world. The number of Internet users is far ahead of other countries. By the beginning of 1997, there were 11 million computers in the United States connected to the Internet, accounting for 63% of the global total of 16.1 million. There are no fewer than 70,000 networks in various countries and the Internet, more than half of them in the United States. Families with more than one personal computer account for 40% of the total U.S. households. The number of U.S. Internet users has exceeded 20 million, equivalent to 50% of the world’s total. The Internet has been widely and effectively used in various aspects of the U.S. economy, culture, industry, publicity, news, entertainment and life.
