Adak rock in the Andes is common. The high-pressure mineralogy revealed by the trace elemental characteristics of this rock suggests three possible causes. The relative importance of these three causes are: thickened Andean crust; subduction-erosion of the forearc crust; and subduction of the young oceanic crust. In the past 30 Ma, each origin pattern of adakite erupted in the Chile-Argentina Andes. Their occurrence coincides with the specific tectonic conditions and events in the rapidly changing tectonic setting of the Chile-Argentina margin.
