The production of thick steel sheets for the oil and gas industry requires semi-finished products of the highest quality grade, such as billets. Calcium treatment at the end of the steelmaking process is very necessary. In this production process, the composition of non-metallic inclusions will change. Direct Reading Spectrometer Pulse Discriminant Analysis (OES-PDA) enables statistical research on all steel samples. OES-PDA was used to test basic microscopic cleanliness parameters such as content and composition. Directional, automated grating electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (REM-EDX) provides more detailed information on non-metallic inclusions and validates OES-PDA data sets. Research shows that the combination of results measured by the two methods provides some new, more detailed information for the process, especially for MgO-inclusions during billet solidification.
