19世纪末,哈尔滨还是一个荒凉、无人问津的渔村。虽然地处松嫩大平原,频临松花江,但优越的交通地理位置并没有得到应有的利用和发挥,被周围的城镇分而辖之。由于这里气候寒冷,人烟稀少,很少有外来商人光顾。但是,随着中东铁路的修筑、通车,哈尔滨迅速崛起,资本主义国家纷纷在此投资办厂。目俄战争、第一次世界大战的爆发,以及国内外一系列的政治风云又给这块刚刚开发的处女地带来巨大的商机。一些民族工商业者从四面八方涌入这里,开始了艰苦创业的历程。经过这些民族工商业开拓者不懈的拼搏,终于迎来哈尔滨民族工商业发展的春天。这其中,双合盛的创始人张廷阁当仁不让地成为哈埠民族工商业的佼佼者。
