Unlike formalism in everyday life, formalism in linguistic studies is not derogatory. Both formalism and non-formalism have their own unique opinions, all of which make their own contribution to linguistics. This article argues that except for the common goal of cognition, the study does not study the form, and whether the language rules are expressed in the form of symbols or not are not the fundamental differences between the two. The fundamental disagreement manifests itself in whether the language is an infinite set and whether the language is modular As well as on the category of view. This disagreement leads to the difference between the research objects and research methods of the two factions and the prosperity of linguistic studies. The article concludes with the revelation of this fundamental disagreement to us.
