左云陈家堡位于大同煤田西北部,处于华北地台的北部边缘,各期地层有许多特殊之处。石炭系上统太原组以三角洲陆相沉积为主的含煤地层,基本上见不到海相灰岩。海相泥岩、泥灰岩也只在南部见到一层。碎屑岩特别发育,煤层较厚。燕山运动是它形成的决定时期。沿东缘发生的口泉—鹅毛口逆推断裂,使煤田以东太古界的上覆地层全部遭受剥蚀,因推覆、挤压,使煤田西、北部平缓上升,遭受剥蚀、侵蚀;侏罗系末期的唐河断裂,使西北部复又快速下沉,并为白垩系巨厚沉积所覆盖;喜山运动再次沿口泉山脉东麓发生强烈断陷,形成大同断陷盆地。
