The countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe were generally plunged into the dilemma of a complete economic decline after the traditional political and economic system was overrun. However, since 1992, the economic conditions in Poland, Hungary and the former Czechoslovakia have shown signs of improvement. The economic downturn has slowed down and some economic indicators have also picked up. Vicious inflation has also been partially suppressed. Among them, Poland’s inflation rate, the first of the three countries, has now dropped from 70% in 1991 to 43% last year. The foreign trade and balance of payments of the three countries also improved. The trade surplus in Poland showed a surplus. The deficit in Hungary decreased by 75% over the previous year.
