Xiaolan Town, Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, is located in the middle of the Pearl River Delta. Since the Ming Dynasty, with the large-scale development in Shatin, a large number of new entrants, settlers and egg farmers have been relocated to the area from all directions and gradually formed a number of new villages and towns. Siu Lam is one such emerging town that has evolved over nearly five centuries from the settlements in the new Sha Tin area. Fifty-seven surnames built ancestral shrines in the town, of which He, Li and Mai were the most powerful. By rehearsing a careful and detailed genealogy to show off their scholarly worldly heritage, they constructed magnificent ancestral shrines to show their place on power. Before 1949, there were 387 shrines and 160 temples in this town of just 12,000. Chrysanthemum is a unique cultural symbol of this town. It is said that the earliest immigrants hundreds of years ago were settled here for the attraction of chrysanthemum. So far, the town is still known as Kikyo.
