The former Soviet Union made the world’s deepest drilling on the Kola Peninsula, some 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the Murmansk region, 2,262 meters deep, most recently as the Guinness Book of Records in the world. The drilling of the original design depth of 15000 meters, opened in 1970, December 1983 to 12066 meters, due to drilling tilt and other reasons once stopped drilling. When drilling was resumed in January 1990 and the current 12262 meters were drilled, the planned depth was not achieved due to forced termination of the hole, mainly because of drilling technology and other reasons.
