A new study by the University of Birmingham and the German Institute of Human Nutrition confirms that people who smoke regularly have a marked increase in the risk of tooth loss. The new study involved more than 23,000 participants, and researchers evaluated the association between smoking, smoking cessation and tooth loss in three different age groups. The results showed that the association between smoking and tooth loss was more pronounced in young people than in the elderly. Compared with non-smokers, male smokers had 3.6 times more risk of tooth loss and female smokers had 2.5 times more risk of tooth loss. The data also show that the greater the smoking, the higher the risk of tooth loss.
