Intel Corp.’s Xeon processor should be able to improve the performance of Windows NT workstations, but systems based on this new processor will still not match the high-end Unix RISC workstations. Xeon-based workstations will give NT users an option to run graphically-intensive, technology-based applications. This new processor, which Intel Corporation is about to release, could be the driving force behind sales of Windows NT workstations. Dataquest data show that in the first quarter of this year, NT workstations sold more than Unix workstations. However, in the most advanced part of the workstation market, users may still stick with their Unix systems as most electronic design automation applications and most multithreaded applications are written for the Unix operating system. In addition, the high-end Unix workstations from Sun and others are more capable of graphics, and the number of these systems is up to the number of Intel-based Windows NT workstations
