沥青混凝土作为路面建筑材料,它的最大问题是与温度有关的强度、形变性和流变性。夏天高温时,沥青混凝土中的沥青粘度要降低,矿料间的粘结力要减弱,因此,沥青混凝土本身的强度、粘度和相对滞留速度(动力特性P_2)都要降低,而它的塑性和相对松弛速度(动力特性P_1)都要提高。在这种情况下,沥青混凝土路面很可能出现剪切变形,例如波浪和拥包,尤其在停车站和刹车处最容易出现这种现象。沥青的粘度增加,矿料间的粘结力增强,同时也出现了脆性。这时沥青混凝土的强度、粘度和相对滞留速度提高了,而相对松弛速度降低了。因此,路面很容易产生温度变形裂缝。为减轻温度对沥青混凝土性能的影响,通常在沥青混凝土中加入外掺材料,如橡胶
