In the fifties of the last century, life in San Joaquin Valley, California was extremely difficult and there were few job opportunities. Dad is doing all the work he can find, while mom is doing two jobs at the same time. Almost everything we eat comes from our vegetable garden. We hardly grow potatoes, yellow onions, or delicious asparagus we love very much because there is no space for them. But that does not matter, people will be invited to dig what is left after they harvest the land together. We had yellow bags in our hands and spent hours looking for large, hard-coated potatoes or very strong onions.
