Jesus is the most important figure in the New Testament and is good at talking about a short and touching, gripping metaphorical story. Many of his metaphors are short literary masterpieces, revealing his wisdom about the kingdom of God and profoundly and multiply influencing Western society and culture. Countless Bible scholars have done a great deal of hard work in the past hundreds of years trying to understand and correctly interpret those metaphors in various ways. This article compares the three approaches taken by contemporary scholars from the perspective of biblical hermeneutics and proposes a new approach to study called “the history of effects”. Then, taking the example of “prodigal” as an example, The History of the Effect Pathways explores new insights into the significance of Jesus’ parables and their interpretation of the Bible.
