优秀的传统值得发扬,劣败的传统使人窒息。历代的学者,常把古老的艺术奉为圭皋,将其“永恒”的规律奉为无上权威,结果往往使历史悠久的文明古国,难于提供全新的电影艺术发展的环境,而在脱颖而出“乳臭未干”的国家,如美国,电影却得到突飞猛进的发展。同电影史的分期一样,历来电影史学家对电影传统也有不同的研究,有的工笔细描,目不暇给。光新现实主义就分新现实主义、玫瑰色的新现实主义、内心的新现实主义、新客观派;先锋派电影就分早期先锋派、后期先锋派;自然主义电影就包括实证主义派、生活流、纯电影、真实电影……等等。有的大笔勾勒,虽然眉济目秀,但又嫌粗疏,如有的同志把西方电影分为技术主义和写实主义两大传统;有的称为苏联模式,好莱坞模式,但似乎都不能概括世界电影的实际和总貌。
