毫无疑义,柳亚子是一位杰出的编辑大家,但这一点似乎早已被他那腾誉诗坛的赫赫声名所掩。说来颇有点匪夷所思,作为一代诗雄的柳亚子,生前竟仅出过薄薄的两册诗文集(《乘桴集》1928年,《怀旧集》1947年),其主要精力,都投献在他所热爱的编辑出版活动上,泽溉士林,为功岂细;若再加籀绎,柳亚子之所以在近代文坛上一直声望广孚,腾誉众口,也莫不与此有关。如果我们进一步从近现代编辑出版史的角度考量,柳亚子无疑应当占有举足轻重的地位。
