Researchers in Australia have found that serum levels in type 2 diabetes patients contain a factor that blocks the insulin-induced lipogenesis and may help explain the insulin resistance associated with the disease. The findings suggest that this factor works after insulin binds to cellular receptors, preventing insulin from stimulating glucose to fatty acids. Dean et al. Used plasma and plasma extracts from non-insulin dependent diabetic patients to examine the adipogenic response of adipocytes to insulin in rats. They report that plasma samples from diabetic patients have a greater ability to suppress the lipogenic effect of insulin than non-diabetic
