Objective To investigate the effect of partial embryonic developmental injury on clinical outcome after freezing and thawing. Methods A retrospective analysis of 310 frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles at the Reproductive Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University from July 2013 to October 2014 was conducted. The embryos were divided into two groups according to their continued development after overnight culture. The 41 cycles that did not continue to develop for two days were Group A, and the other 269 cycles that at least one embryo continued to develop the second day after thawing were Group B. The implantation rate and clinical pregnancy rate were compared between the two groups. Results The implantation rate and pregnancy rate in group B were significantly higher than those in group A [7.69% (7/91), 14.63% (6/41)] and 17.83% (110/617) and 32.34% (87/269), respectively <0.05). Conclusion Some embryos were injured after freezing and thawing, and the implantation rate and pregnancy rate were lower than those without continuous development after overnight culture. The developmental potential was an important factor affecting the clinical outcome.
