In jet engines, most of the directional solidification superalloy turbine blades and vanes that operate at temperatures not lower than 950 ° C typically contain hafnium to improve mechanical and service properties. The addition of hafnium increases the cost of the alloy, limiting its use. Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials developed a hafnium-free directional solidification superalloy DZ4 in the late 1970s. The alloy has high mechanical properties, good castability, low cost and suitable for production and application.
