袁孝亭先生将地理学科能力划分为一般能力和特殊能力。特殊学科能力是以地理学科特性为基础的特色思维能力,包括空间定位能力、空间分布格局的觉察能力、地理特征的综合分析能力、地理过程的描述与简单预测能力、地理因果关系分析与推理能力五种。由于这些能力本身存在不同程度的差异,造成教师在设定教学目标过程中对学习程度的把握往往模棱两可。SOLO分类理论的出现,为地理学科能力层级的划分提供了理论依据。
