Strawson’s refutation of the skepticism about the outside world and the souls of others is often seen as some transcendental argument. B. Barry Stroud criticizes Strawson’s transcendental argument based on the principle of positivism and can not successfully refute skepticism. Strawson responded to Stead’s criticism in his book Skepticism and Naturalism. He maintains that the descriptive metaphysics maintains a moderate naturalist position that does not intend to resort to rational arguments to refute skepticism but merely content to explain the ineffectiveness of skepticism. The main work of transcendental argumentation is not to contradict skepticism but to reveal the inherent relationship between the major structural elements of the conceptual schema, thereby revealing the naturalistic trait that characterizes metaphysics.
