明朝初年，接替朱元璋继承帝位的朱克，为巩固帝位，听从宠臣齐秦、黄子澄建言，逐步削弱分封在各地的１０多个叔父的藩王权限。镇守北平的燕王朱棣以除皇帝身边奸臣为借口，起兵发动“靖难之役”。驻守济南的山东布政使铁铉拼死抵抗燕军南下。朱棣夺取帝位后，将３６岁的铁铉残酷杀害。后人敬佩铁铉宁死不屈的精神，在济南大明湖岸建铁公祠以表纪念，一些文人学士吟诗赞颂。
