It is estimated that about 1,700 F-5s currently in service in the air force in 26 countries and regions around the world are still in service, and another about 800 two-seater trainers that have been developed on the same prototype as the F-5 US Air Force in service. According to estimates by Northrop Grumman Aircraft, a F-5 fighter aircraft designer and manufacturer, about one-half of the 1,700 F-5 fighters currently active worldwide are likely to undergo life extension and refurbishment. Refit costs up to 1.5 billion US dollars. Another half of the U.S. Air Force’s more than 800 active-seat two-seater trainers have to modernize their electronics. This is an attractive market for aircraft and airborne equipment manufacturers.
