Prospecting geochemistry, or geochemical prospecting, is the practical application of theoretical geochemical principles in mineral exploration. The methods used include systematic measurement of one or more chemical components of various available earth materials (soil, rock, water, plants, air and other media). The purpose is to identify chemical patterns associated with the presence of minerals. This applied discipline has evolved over the last 25 years into a standard component of mineral exploration programs throughout the world. Its applications are also on the rise in oil and geothermal exploration and environmental assessment.
