Few lasers compare with free-electron technology for the tunability and high power of short-wavelength light. Recent research has raised this level. The Thomas Jefferson Accelerator Institute in the UK reported that their free-electron laser has reached a 1.7kW output at 3.1 μm. This result exceeded its 1kW target. The next goal is to output 10 k continuous wave in the infrared region
