Objective To investigate the status quo of first aid knowledge acquisition of middle school students in Changsha by sampling the first aid knowledge of freshmen in Changsha City. Methods The random cluster sampling was adopted in 2013. A total of 7 687 freshmen in Changsha City were selected as the subjects of this study. The questionnaires were used to grasp the current situation of high school freshman knowledge of emergency science and master of skills. Using SPSS18.0 for data analysis, count data using frequency analysis and chi-square test. Results The main ways to obtain first aid knowledge of high school freshmen were: books (62.16%), television (60.22%), network (55.54%) and school (54.04%). The study of five common sense of emergency survey found that the highest freshman emergency telephone number awareness rate (97.46%), other first aid knowledge is less than 50%. A survey of 5 first-aid measures found that freshmen had the highest awareness rate of first aid measures for carbon monoxide poisoning (88.07%), followed by foot and ankle injuries, the awareness rate was 73.92%, awareness of the other three first aid measures was less than 30% . Freshmen’s understanding of the principle of on-site first aid for severe traumatic injury and the principle of handling fractured spine were more than those of open fractures. The first two were more than 60% and the latter only 30%. The awareness rate of first responders on first aid site and first aid measures of scald were 38.09% and 13.79%, respectively. The awareness rate of freshmen who had been trained was higher than that of unaccredited freshmen , The difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusions In 2013, freshmen in Changsha City had a low understanding rate of first aid knowledge. Therefore, it is urgent to increase freshmen’s training of first aid knowledge and management principles for common accidental injuries.
