印度尼西亚国立博物馆是1868年正式开馆的。而其起源,则可追溯到1778年巴塔维亚美术科学学会的设立;该学会的创立者把个人收集的民族资料、文献等寄赠给这个学会,以此契机,其后,收藏品不断扩充,促使该博物馆得以开馆。在1868年开馆的时候,为了纪念它,泰国寄赠了一只象的青铜像,它至今还展示在博物馆的前院;由此,该博物馆被雅加达市民亲切地称为“象博物馆”或者是“象馆”。 博物馆的收藏品经分类、整理分为如下8个部分。
