Manganese is an essential trace nutrient for plants. If the soil is deficient in manganese, special physiological diseases will occur in crops, resulting in reduced yields and declining quality. This paper introduces the distribution of manganese in Shanghai soils and the degree of abundance and deficiency as well as the effect of manganese fertilizer. First, the distribution of manganese content in Shanghai soil manganese content (total) range between 280 ~ 1076 ppm, an average of 541ppm, lower than China’s average soil manganese content (710ppm). The manganese content of the soil in this region is more evenly distributed. All kinds of soil total manganese content, the largest difference of not more than three times the coefficient of variation mostly fluctuate between 15 to 20%. The frequency distribution of total manganese content is also quite concentrated. Among more than 150 test samples, the total manganese content is distributed in the range of 400-600ppm, accounting for 48%, and the samples containing 600-800ppm and 800ppm each account for 26% respectively. The content of manganese in the soil is mainly determined by the process of soil-forming parent material and soil formation, the shadow of the former
