Although Saul Bellow’s “Looking for Mr. Green” is a short story, he has profound ideological character. In Chicago after the Great Depression, Georgette Grubbs, an ordinary intellectual, spent many twists and turns in sending checks for relief to Terry Greene. He is not afraid of setbacks and painstaking searches reflect a universal value that is intrinsic to his concern for humanity, that is, his dedication to good in a world where he “falls apart.” The novel reflects Saul Bellow’s important humanistic philosophy.
