Objective To investigate the correlation between social support and preoperative anxiety in patients with rectal colostomy and to explore effective ways to reduce preoperative anxiety. Methods A total of 70 patients undergoing colostomy underwent questionnaire survey using the State Trait-Anxiolytic Scale (STAI) and Social Support Self-Assessment Scale (PRQ85, Part2) 1d preoperatively. Results The preoperative anxiety score (55.89 ± 14.34) in colostomy patients was significantly higher than that in normotensive subjects (39.31 ± 8.66), the difference was significant (P <0.01), and the anxiety score was significantly higher in patients ≤50 years old (P <0.05). The social support score (86.06 ± 10.79) was moderate, and there was a significant negative correlation between social support and preoperative anxiety (r = -0.446). Conclusion Social support can be used as a means of nursing intervention to help patients reduce preoperative anxiety in order to facilitate the successful completion of surgery and postoperative rehabilitation.
