Since the 1960s, the economy of South Korea has been developing rapidly. From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, South Korea’s economy grew at an average annual rate of 10%. Since the 1980s, despite the economic crisis in the entire capitalist world, the economy still maintained a rather strong vitality. The average annual growth rate was 7.5% in 1981-1984. The per capita GNP in 1961 was only 87 U.S. dollars and in 1981 it reached 1,638 U.S. dollars. By the end of 1984, it reached 1,999 U.S. dollars, an increase of more than 20 times in 23 years. According to the latest statistics, in 1990 it exceeded 5,000 U.S. dollars. At present, South Korea has become one of the emerging industrialized countries and regions that attract worldwide attention. Its science and technology level occupies the leading position in the “medium-developed countries,” and in some areas has reached the world advanced level.
