中医学认为,中药和食物均具有寒、热、温、凉之性,称“四气”;辛、甘、酸、苦、咸之味,称“五味”。而疾病则有虚、实、寒、热之辨,阴、阳、表、里之别,因此,中药治疗疾病时应采取“寒则温之、热则凉之、虚则补之、实则泻之”的辨证施治原则,同时还要注意饮食与辨证用药的统一性和针对性,尽可能做到“辨证施治”、“辨证用膳”。
