Objective To explore the practical and effective schistosomiasis health education intervention model. Methods A pilot study on schistosomiasis health education was conducted among 24 687 inhabitants in 18 outbreak villages in 15 epidemic-affected counties (prefectures) in Jiangxi Province from 1992 to 1998, and expanded application research and popularization and application research. Results After the intervention, the knowledge level of blood-armor was significantly increased and the awareness of blood-armor was significantly increased. Most adult women overcame the wrong blood-proof values of using water-washing, the contact rate of infected water and schistosomiasis among students and adult women were significantly decreased, The compliance of chemotherapy increased significantly, thus introducing a new strategy of prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis with health education as the mainstay, combined with population chemotherapy, and discussed the effectiveness, feasibility and application value of this strategy; The main way of water and the main reason of schistosomiasis infection; the grouping method of target population for schistosomiasis health education was established; the targeted intervention modes and measures for different target groups were developed; the goal of health education for schistosomiasis for different target groups was put forward ; Established a complete index system of health education evaluation of schistosomiasis. Conclusion Based on health education, combined with the new strategy of population chemotherapy control can effectively control the residents of new infections and re-infection of schistosomiasis.
