小麦、玉米是正定县的主要粮食作物。两大作物的总产占全县粮食总产的80%以上。而小麦、玉米连作一年两熟制又是主要的种植方式。近年来,玉米的前作几乎全是小麦,60%的小麦是玉米茬口。因此,充分利用当地光、热等自然资源,搞好小麦、玉米连作,充分挖掘其增产潜力,提高周年粮食产量,就能在保证粮食消费的前提下,为发展经济作物提供更多的土地资源。对改善和提高人民生活水平有十分重大的意义。我们从1981年小麦播种开始,连续四年在诸福屯乡蟠桃村进行“小麦、玉米连作,亩产过吨粮”的定位研究。
